In 2006, the Gas Operations Department was established on the basis of the Gas Operations Department of the Marketing and Economic Operations Department of the State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) in order to implement the technological processes of receiving, transporting and delivering natural gas. In accordance with the relevant Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Ilham Aliyev, dated the 20th of July 2009 on “Improving the structure of SOCAR”, the name of the Gas Operations Department was changed to the Gas Export Department.
In 2013, the structure of the Department was improved, and 7 main gas pipeline areas and corrosion protection of gas pipelines, electricity supply and radio communication areas of Azerigaz Production Association were transferred to the department.
The department carries out the effective management of gas volumes, technical and metrological operations in accordance with normative rules for receiving gas and transporting it into the republican energy corridor through the transportation systems, as well as transportation and export of Azerigaz’ gas volumes to Georgia in accordance with the relevant contracts. According to the service agreement for the implementation of the decision on transferring Azerbaijan’s domestic natural gas sale to Azcontract OJSC, the department carrying out operations on receiving gas on the basis of gas contracts and operations protocols, transportation of gas to domestic gas distributors – Azerenergy, Azerigaz and Gas Consumption Service of Nakhchivan, operations management and relevant technical, metrological and other operations under the agreement terms. The department was also accredited to implement all rights and commitments related to the gas sale and purchase agreement between SOCAR and Turkmenistan’s Turkmengas, as well as all SOCAR’s commitments toward the gas delivery agreement signed by SOCAR and SOCAR Trading SA for delivering gas to the Italian markets.
At the same time, the Department implemented the obligations arising from the natural gas purchase and sale and swap agreements signed between Gazprom Export LLC and SOCAR.
The Gas Operations Department implemented the contract signed between Azerenergy OJSC and the Department on gas volumes of used in export energy signed on September 1, 2023.
The execution of all rights and obligations of the natural gas purchase and sale agreement signed between SOCAR-ABSHERON (JOCAP) and SOCAR has been entrusted to the Gas Operations Department.
