The block, which includes the South-West Flange of the Mughan monocline, is located in the Lower Kura oil and gas region in the north-western part of the South Caspian Basin. As the area's oil and gas sedimentary complexes are located in deep layers, they have yet to be studied in detail by exploration wells. Therefore, a certain opinion about these sediments is mainly due to the solid eruption materials of mud volcanoes, which are widespread here.
The block, which includes the South-West Flange of the Mughan monocline, includes the Nasimikend and Azadkend structures in the Saatly District, the Hashimkhanly and Sarkhanbeyli structures in the Sabirabad District, and the Shorsulu structures in Salyan District, as well as the southern part of the Mughan structure and the Middle Mughan structure in the administrative territory of Bilasuvar District. Almost all research methods related to field geophysics were used and seismic works have been carried out in the structures. As a result of seismic surveys conducted in 1971, certain ideas about the existence of the Shorsulu structure were formed. In 1972, the presence of the structure was confirmed. Exploration well No. 1 was drilled to a depth of 4,507 m in the area. No oil flow was received due to the absorption of the clay solution in the well.
Geologists estimated the in-place reserves in these structures as approximately 101,000 tons of oil, and 10.1MM m³ of associated gas.
The structure is on the balance sheet of the Neftchala Operating Company. According to the restoration, development and production sharing agreement between SOCAR, Neftchala Investments Limited and SOCAR Oil Affiliate on Neftchala, Khylly, Durovdagh-Babazanan oil fields and the block, including the Mughan monocline's south-west flange, Neftchala Operating Company is the operator of the field. The agreement entered into force on 5 October 2009. The oil and gas operations are carried out in Neftchala and Khylly oil fields. The 2,707.7 km² contract area is located in the territory of the Neftchala and Salyan districts.
