Turkan

The Turkan-Deniz elevation is located in the eastern plain of the Absheron petroliferous region, the coastal zone in the south of the Absheron peninsula, southeast of Baku. The depth of the sea is about 5 m there. Currently, there are no development operations in the Turkan field, which goes into exploring fields.

The uplift was discovered in 1980 during seismic surveys. Geo-tectonically the elevation is located in the area of the Gala-Turkan fold's far marine pericline, within the Absheron archipelago.

Only two of 22 exploration wells drilled in the Turkan field in 1946-1967 produced industrial oil; one was being exploited in 1950-1954, and another in 1955-1960. Their total production was more than 47,700 tons during this period. Other wells were abandoned for different reasons. The oil and gas content of the field's horizons has yet to be studied thoroughly.

After the 1960s, geological and geophysical surveys and exploration drilling have not been carried out there for a long time. But seismic surveys conducted since 2000 gave positive results in studying the geological structure and oil and gas content of the Turkan field. Based on these results, an exploration well with a 3,800 m planned depth was drilled in the field to research the oil and gas content of the Gala sedimentations. Rock samples were taken during the 1.3-year drilling operations, but the field was not included in the development.
