The Umbaki oil field, which is included in the Shamakhy-Gobustan oil and gas region, is located 80 km west of Baku, in a hilly area north-west of Sangachal railway station.
The field was first researched in 1926 by the well-known geologist N.S. Shatski. For the purpose of first the exploration, structural mapping and exploration drilling were conducted there in 1946-1948. Tectonically, the Umbaki field is a brachyanticline structure extending across its width and complicated by longitudinal and traverse faults. The field has always been rich in the appearance of oil and gas, which came to the surface through multiple springs and salses. The field’s oil and gas content was identified through the first exploration well drilled in its north-eastern limb, which kicked off the field’s development in 1951. The Umbaki’s first well gave 5 tons of oil per day. But well No. 23, drilled in 1953, was more productive with 500,000 cubic metres of gas per day.
The highest production was recorded in 1953. 160,000 tons of oil extracted in that year composed 11% of the country’s total production. 227 wells have been drilled and a total of 1.487 million tons of oil has been produced since the beginning of its development until the 1st of January 2024.
The field is operated by the A. Amirov OGPD of SOCAR’s Azneft PU.
