14/06/2025

On June 13, 2025, the Baku Convention Center hosted the premiere of the documentary “Thomas Goltz: An Oil Odyssey”, which explores the life and work of renowned American journalist and author Thomas Goltz and his contributions to promoting Azerbaijan’s energy policy.

The event marked the 102nd anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev’s birth and gathered government officials, SOCAR leadership, representatives from the Ministry of Economy and SOCAR, members of the public, Thomas Goltz’s family members, and—symbolically—102 students from Baku Higher Oil School.

In their opening remarks, speakers emphasized the documentary’s focus on Heydar Aliyev’s visionary energy strategy and the pivotal role of Azerbaijan’s oil industry in shaping the country’s modern history. The film includes rare archival footage, interviews, and personal reflections on Thomas Goltz.

Speakers also highlighted how Heydar Aliyev’s foresight and strategic leadership led to the signing of the “Contract of the Century”, a landmark agreement that introduced Azerbaijan’s energy sector to the world and established the country as a key player in global energy markets. They noted that today’s accomplishments trace back to the National Leader’s political resolve and comprehensive energy vision.

Attendees honored Thomas Goltz’s unwavering commitment to covering Azerbaijan and his tireless efforts to share the country’s story with the international community.

Guest of honor Hafiz Pashayev, Rector of ADA University, delivered a speech recognizing Goltz’s role in promoting Azerbaijan’s energy strategy.

Thomas Goltz’s brother, Vincent Goltz, spoke of his late brother’s profound love for Azerbaijan and expressed his family’s appreciation for the documentary and the respect shown to his memory.

The event honored Thomas Goltz as a devoted friend of Azerbaijan and paid tribute to the enduring significance of his legacy.
